for my next entry, i’d like to go back to a project i was given last year.

last summer i was contracted out by the band sarcasm to design the artwork and layout for their ep release, “how to lose your mind.” the band basically told me to go nuts and do whatever i felt would fit the title of the album. of course they had their input, but for the most part, the direction of the cd was based off the main illustration.

since i was doing a layout for a cd called “how to lose your mind,” i felt like it was the perfect opportunity to explore the weird state of consciousness known as dreaming. the illustration for the design was based off an extremely odd and troubling dream i had about a week before the project commenced and actually features a very realistic portrayal of what i woke up remembering. (a first in my documentation of dream imagery.)

the original sketches in progress:

the original concept for this logotype was based off a suggestion from the subliminal records, erick’s label. as you can see, there doesn’t really seem to be much of a direction, just some solid typesetting.

i was commisioned by shock value records about a year ago to design and screenprint a 7″ record sleeve for the band newgenics. this design had almost completely slipped my mind until i found some of the preliminary sketches that went along with it. i definitely had to share this one.

the original idea was to play with some typography dimensionality.

this type treatment is for an illustration entitled “american muscle: volume one.” it’s for a stock illustration cd comprised of muscle cars and their related imagery. for each cd in the set, there are five designs showcasing the strength and flexibility of each stock illustration. here is a clean version of the type design, followed by the implementation.

hip-hop motion director bryan barber was looking for an identity and website for his newly established production company. here are a few ideas i had worked up for the project.

one of the main topics i’ll be covering here on the ol’ blogger is progression through projects. as discussed with a friend, it’s very cool to be able to track the development in a piece of design to see it evolve, become something special, or even watch it crumble under client pressures.

the first project i’d like to run through is a promotional snowboard design for southern comfort.

the initial sketches brought forth a lot of garbage and nothing i was all too pleased with. the character that ended up slipping through the cracks though actually started to become something of interest, so i pursued it.

my cleaned up [second] sketch as you see here was inked and scanned.

unfortunately at work i have to do a lot of flyers for local city clubs. they’re not the most glamorous piece of design work, but it’s gotta get done. every now and then a good one comes along and i like to share it. this one was for crobar and i really liked how the “warriors” graffiti came out in the end.

this type treatment is a logo i put together for my friend’s newest musical endeavor entitled “brotherhood of spies.” as you can tell by the name, the typeset had to have a very erie feeling and appear as if it were part of a mystery novel. i may have gone overboard with the swashes, but i just love them so much, i couldn’t help myself.
